An experimental study on the relationship between traumatic bone and periosteum

Abstract
This study was undertaken to evaluate the role of periosteum in the regeneration of bony cavity in adult rat calvalia. Twenty male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study. Two bony cavities of 3mm diameter was prepared in the each side of calvalium. In the control side, the periosteum of the cavity was clearly resected before cavity preparation, and in the test side, the periosteum was carefully preserved. Both clinical and histological investigations demonstrated the functions of periosteum in the total healing process of the bony cavity. It displays an essential role of periosteum in the regeneration of bony cavity.
It follows:
I. The periosteum acts as a protective barrier during the healing process of bony cavities by preventing the ingrowth of connective tissue which allows an undisturbed environment for new bone formation.
2. Periosteum actively participates in new bone formation and serves as a guide for extending newley formed bone from the cut ends of calvaria along with it.
